Track ballast forms the trackbed upon which railroad ties (sleepers) are laid. It is packed between, below, and around the ties. It is used to bear the load from the railroad ties, to facilitate drainage of water, and also to keep down vegetation that might interfere with the track structure. Ballast also holds the track in place as the trains roll over it.
· September 30, 2011 BALLAST AND WALKWAY AGGREGATE B. Unload ballast directly from rail cars onto the track. Distribution by truck or loader is subject to the approval of the Engineer. C. · Ballasted track and ballastless track are typical types of railroad track. In general, railway track consist of ballast bed, steel rail, railway sleeper, railway fish plate, rail clip, railroad tie plate and other railway fasteners. How to build a railway track with all these components? Here is the guide to introduce the process step by step.
regard to ballast profile, in particular for the purposes of track lateral stability [2] Depth of ballastis measured under the rail seat and does not include the capping layer or sub ballast where used. [3] On superelevated track, the depth of ballast is measured under the low rail.

using tamper and ballast regulators to redistribute ballast – the stones beneath the track that give support – and compact it beneath the sleeper so that it maintains the track geometry carrying out profile treatment to grind away part of the rail head – the top surface of the rail that the train's wheels run on – to leave a clean surface for a smoother ride
· Railway track formations generally consist essentially of a layer of coarse aggregate, or ballast, in which the sleepers are embedded (see Fig. ). The ballast may rest directly on the subgrade or, depending on the bearing capacity, on a layer of blanketing sand. The layer of ballast is intended to provide a free draining base which is stable enough to maintain the track aUgnment with .

The Rail Hugger is engineered to give you the most advanced alternative to today's railroad track scales. The lowprofile scale adapts to (or will be custommade for) any combination of car lengths. Because it is mounted above ground in a shallow, concrete foundation, there is no worry about shifting ballast resulting in weight errors.

Ballast handling activities create fine particles (dust).Ballast dust contains small quantities of Respirable Crystalline Silica (RCS). Breathing in this dust at high concentrations over prolonged periods of time may lead to the development of a condition known as silicosis . Silicosis: RCS scars the lung tissue and can lead to permanent breathing difficulties

BALLAST COMPACTION Ballast crib and shoulder compactors are used behind all ma jor surfacing operations. This compaction provides the ap proximate equivalent of 3 or 4 days of train operation in restoring lateral stability of the track. The slow order can be removed much sooner and in many cases does not need to be placed at all.
